Tanzania set the ambitious goal of ensuring that by 2026 all children aged 0–8 years are on track to develop to their full potential. The National Multisectoral Early Childhood Development Programme (NM-ECDP) signals the government’s commitment to achieving this goal. The NM-ECDP includes support for parenting as a key focus.
The Kizazi Kijacho (‘The Next Generation’) (KK) parenting programme in Tanzania responds to this national focus on parenting. KK was implemented in Dodoma Region from October 2022 to February 2025, and provided support for families from pregnancy until children were age 2. The programme aimed to strengthen parenting by improving the counselling on nurturing care delivered by community health workers (CHWs) and by supporting households’ economic security through the provision of a cash transfer. KK was implemented as a randomised controlled trial (RCT) that compared three options: CHW counselling alone; an unconditional cash transfer (UCT) alone; and a combination of counselling and the UCT. This report presents findings from qualitative research on KK.
