Teaching kindergarten in pre-primary education

Thrive - Policy Brief | Ghana | 31st December 2024

Perspectives of Ghana Education Service staff on the respect for their profession

Thrive is investigating the governance systems and processes underpinning kindergarten initiatives in Ghana with a focus on scalability, replicability and sustainability. It aims to help policymakers identify and address some of the key challenges to recruitment, motivation and retention in the kindergarten sector. Central to this is the relationship between teacher motivation and the respect they receive within their communities and from other stakeholders, as both factors are key to enhancing teaching quality and ensuring the success of kindergarten programmes.

This briefing:

  • examines whether kindergarten teachers feel respected within their communities and more broadly
  • analyses differences in perceptions based on teacher characteristics (e.g. gender, age and origin) and working conditions (e.g. class size and community support)
  • assesses the perceptions of head teachers on the role and value of kindergarten teachers and pre-primary education.
