Scaling responsive caregiving through parenting programmes: what have we learnt?

News | 22nd April 2024

Parenting programmes to promote responsive caregiving in children’s early years have been shown to be highly effective in improving life outcomes. From the history of these programmes, we can learn a lot about the challenges and opportunities associated with scaling these interventions successfully in varied settings and contexts. How can we use the insights from research evidence to inform our work in Tanzania and the region?

In this session, the renowned economist, Prof. Orazio Attanasio from Yale University will take us on the evolutionary journey of parenting programmes – sharing with us the lessons he has learned from carrying out research on different types of initiatives in multiple countries over the last two decades. Prof. Attanasio has been awarded several prestigious grants and prizes, including the Klaus J. Jacobs Research Prize for his use of economic models and field experiments to assess and shape early child development programmes and policies in low-income countries. The lecture will be followed by an interactive panel discussion that will feature a diverse selection of leaders involved in the early childhood development policy and practice debate in Tanzania, who will consider the practical implications of research evidence on parenting programmes.
